Use
proper planting techniques for best growth from your new plants.
-
Have
your hole dug before you remove the plant from its pot. Dig the hole
twice as wide as the size of the pot. For trees and shrubs, make the
hole no deeper than the level of the soil in the pot.
-
For
small potted plants, turn the plant over in your hand and gently tap
the bottom of the pot to slip the plant out. If the plants are
root-bound, with a mass of white roots on the sides and bottom, cut
the roots with a knife or loosen them with your fingers.
-
With
plants in pots one-gallon size or larger, hold the plant at the base
of the main stem and lift it about a foot off the ground. Hit the
edge of the pot to knock it off.
-
Place
the freed plant into the prepared hole and check that the top of the
soil line is flush with the top of your hole. You may need to dig a
little deeper or throw some soil back into the hole to level it up.
Fill the sides of hole with the removed soil, tamping it down
lightly as you fill.
-
Water
thoroughly and mulch the top of the soil when you finish. Water
newly planted items every couple of days for the first week, every
three days for the second week, then once a week through their first
season of growth.

TIP
OF THE MONTH..................
Keep
pesky moles, gophers and rabbits out of your garden with new organic
products containing castor oil.
-
Mole
Max is a granular product that you sprinkle around in your garden or
flowerbeds.
-
The
makers of Liquid Fence, a very effective deer repellent, have a new
repellent for moles, gophers and rabbits. It is a liquid you mix
with water and spray on and around your plants.
Both
products last for several weeks before you need to re-apply.
|
-
Fertilize
lawn and gardens early in the month to give them a boost before
really hot weather starts.
-
Prune
fall-blooming perennials about one third of the way back to promote
branching and more flowers.
-
Be
on the lookout for whitefly, spider mites and bagworms. Treat with
an organic spray before they get out of hand. Spray the underside of
the leaves to reach your target.
-
Harvest
your vegetable garden often. When you quit picking, your vegetable
plants quit producing.
