Improved
Meyers Lemon (Citrus x meyeri) – At the price of lemons
in the grocery store, why not enjoy growing your own lemon tree.
Although only marginally winter hardy this far north, the plants make
wonderful container trees. They naturally grow to 10-12 feet but can be
pruned to a more moderate size and will live in pots for years. In mild
winters, cover the plants with frost cloth during a light freeze. You
can protect them during temperatures that fall below the upper 20’s in
a greenhouse, garage or inside until the weather warms. Very heat
loving, lemons require at least six hours of sunshine a day. The
fruits themselves are large, juicy and round with a thin skin and a
lovely flavor. The small white flowers are extremely fragrant. The
majority of fruit ripens during the winter months.

Caraway Thyme (Thymus herba barona) – This is a groundcover type thyme that spreads into a wide mat with tiny fragrant leaves. This variety like all, likes great drainage and plenty of sun. Planting among rocks or in shallow containers will keep their roots from rotting during rainy periods. Use the foliage in cooking where a caraway taste is needed. Thyme is a versatile herb and this variety is delicious in homemade breads or included in meat dishes. |
